Ensuring life safety through compliance with BS 5266-1:2016
Emergency lighting is critical for life safety. In the event of a power failure, it provides illumination to guide occupants safely out of a building. That’s why it’s essential that emergency lighting systems are installed, maintained, and tested regularly in accordance with BS 5266-1:2016.
At AK Fire Safety, our trained engineers ensure that your emergency lighting is fully functional, compliant, and ready when you need it most — whether it’s in a school, care home, office, or warehouse.
We inspect and maintain both maintained and non-maintained systems across a wide range of premises:
Shops & offices
Schools & colleges
Care homes & hospitals
Factories & warehouses
Public buildings & churches
HMOs, village halls, and more
Our engineers are trained to service emergency lighting systems of all sizes, from small local properties to large national sites.
BS 5266-1:2016 requires emergency lighting to be tested annually to ensure full compliance.
Regular testing helps you identify faults early and ensures your system works when it matters most.
Failure to test and maintain your system may result in:
Non-compliance with UK fire safety laws
Invalidation of insurance policies
Increased risk to life and property in emergencies
Simulate a mains failure using the test switch or isolating the primary circuit.
Check that all emergency lights illuminate correctly.
Inspect LED indicators (red/green) for AC and battery health.
Look for signs of wear, damage, or dirty diffusers.
Record results in the Fire Log Book.
Simulate a full power failure for 3 hours.
Ensure all emergency lights stay illuminated for the full duration.
Test battery charging and perform capacity checks.
Conduct a full inspection of luminaire condition.
Results must be recorded in the Fire Log Book.
🔄 All remedial works between inspections must also be documented.
A full service should be completed twice a year by a competent engineer. This includes:
Switching off mains power to test emergency battery runtime
Confirming the recharging functionality works as required
Inspecting all fittings, diffusers, wiring and signage
Replacing failed batteries or defective lighting units
Any failed units or components identified during inspections should be repaired or replaced promptly. We can schedule quick and efficient remedial works, ensuring:
Your system remains fully compliant
Faulty components are swiftly addressed
All actions are recorded in the Fire Log Book
If you own a business premises and employ staff, you have a legal duty of care to ensure safe evacuation in the event of an emergency. A key component of this safety is emergency lighting — ensuring that escape routes, exits, and critical areas remain illuminated when the mains power fails.
